XRP Market Report — September 2026
The month in one paragraph
September 2026 was the month the tape went vertical, then quiet. XRP opened the month at $1.3790 (the August 31 close), was cut to a $1.2527 low by the one-two of a failed CLARITY cloture vote (September 15, 49–50) and a hawkish Fed (September 16), then produced the quarter's defining fortnight: an 8.7% short squeeze on September 21, the first trade above $1.60 since February 4 on September 22, an eight-month high at $1.6536 on September 23 — and, forty-five minutes into the next session, the Bitget breach that became the year's largest exchange security event. The month closed at $1.4884, +7.9%, completing the first all-green quarter on record (July +2.12%, August +30.05%, September +7.94% — CryptoRank via TheChainPost; TokenPost). Around the tape, the structure moved more than the price did: the ETF complex printed its second-best month ($121.4M against August's record $159.2M), open interest rebuilt 43% in six days to a nine-month record $4.10B, RLUSD compounded to ~$2.5B, the custody map became fully legible for the first time, and the ledger's three flagship amendments crossed their activation thresholds. Every number in this report carries its source and snapshot date.
1. The tape: $1.38 → $1.25 → $1.65 → $1.49
| Date | Event | Source, date |
|---|---|---|
| Sep 1 | The monthly escrow cycle runs textbook: 1B XRP released, 700M re-locked, 300M net — the market shrugs; XRP closes $1.3516 | XRPScan reads; CoinMarketCap historical |
| Sep 15 | The Senate's CLARITY Act cloture vote fails 49–50; XRP slides to $1.28 by the close | Yahoo Finance month review, Sep 22 |
| Sep 16 | The Fed delivers a hawkish hike; the month's low prints $1.2527 | CoinMarketCap historical; prior-edition coverage |
| Sep 18–20 | Stabilization: $1.3962 → $1.4104 → $1.4099 closes | CoinMarketCap historical |
| Sep 21 | The squeeze: ~$300M of shorts closed market-wide inside an hour; XRP +8.7% to $1.5330 — the largest one-day gain in the major-cap complex | 24/7 Wall St.; Yahoo Finance, Sep 24 |
| Sep 22 | First trade above $1.60 since February 4 ($1.6018 high); closes $1.5718 | Santiment via Blockonomi; CoinMarketCap |
| Sep 23 | The peak: $1.6536 intraday (eight-month high, +17.3% on the week at the extreme), then an 11.6% intraday reversal to close $1.5006; open interest prints a nine-month record $4.10B the same session | CoinMarketCap; CoinGlass via Blockonomi |
| Sep 24 | The Bitget breach: $351.6M disclosed at 18:31 UTC, revised to $387.5M within 48 hours; 102.9M XRP ($157.5M) is the largest single asset; XRP closes higher at $1.5331 | cryptonews.net; COINOTAG; Coinpedia, Sep 24–26 |
| Sep 25–27 | Digestion on heavy volume: $1.5684 → $1.5237 → $1.5098; the week closes +7.1% | CoinMarketCap; prior editions |
| Sep 28–Oct 4 | The quiet fortnight begins: seven closes inside four cents, Oct 4 at $1.5202; the descending triangle forms | CoinMarketCap |
| Sep 30 | Month-end markers: Evernorth's shareholder vote clears; RLUSD "~$2.4B" per Ripple; Bitget replenishes its protection fund; core PCE prints 3.0% vs 3.3% expected | Evernorth; The Bitstream; BTCRepublic; XInvest News |
The character notes that matter: the rally was a squeeze riding a rebuilt leverage stack. The book — which had thinned to $2.86B by September 17 — added 43% in six days into the September 23 record, and the same session printed the 11.6% intraday reversal. And the month's two largest events ran in opposite directions: the CLARITY failure and hawkish hike (no asset-specific content) cut XRP ~10% intraday, while the Bitget breach (directly asset-specific) moved the close up. The market paid for changes to the distribution of future outcomes and refused to pay for damage to the past — the pattern this site documented in the CLARITY week event study, now confirmed by a second, larger natural experiment.
2. Fund flows: the $121.4M month and the gap that grew
| Week (ending) | Net inflow | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Sep 4 | ~$13.3M | Carry-over from the August record |
| Sep 11 | ~$19.0M | — |
| Sep 18 | ~$9.6M | The decision-week drought |
| Sep 25 | +$75.6M | The squeeze week — 62% of the month; 11th consecutive positive week; $0.00 Monday then four green sessions |
| Oct 2 | +$4.74M | The thinnest streak week; Bitwise's first red week; the 12th consecutive positive week |
Weekly components from sourced prints in prior editions; Sep 28–30 shown inside the final week's published total. Components sum to the ~$121.4M monthly figure within rounding (SoSoValue via Check Crypto News / Bitcoin.com News, Oct 2–5).
September is the second-best month in the complex's history — a record-then-step-down sequence (159.2 → 121.4) that mirrors the price's own pattern of spike-then-digest. The month's inside shape is the honest story: three weeks of drought-adjacent drift (~$42M combined) and one squeeze week that carried 62% of the total, meaning September ex-squeeze was roughly a $46M month — real, but in July's category. Cumulative inflows finished at ~$1.79B against net assets of $1.66B, a ~$133M gap that widened from ~$20M in mid-September — the complex's average dollar is now more than 7% under water, and the week the gap hit its widest was the week the complex's largest holder posted its first red print. The Solana comparison sharpened the point: SOL's complex overtook XRP's in assets ($1.91B vs $1.66B) on fewer contributed dollars, on newer basis (Bitcoin.com News via Check Crypto News, Oct 2–5).
Scale check, both directions: Bitcoin's complex took ~$2.65B in September (13 green sessions, 8 red) and Ether's ~$831M — XRP's second-best month ever is ~4.6% of Bitcoin's routine one (Farside aggregation via SuperEx, Oct 1). The structural sentence of the quarter stands: the ETF bid is real, dated, and still an order of magnitude away from setting XRP's price — exchanges hold roughly seventeen times what the complex does (20.32B vs 1.18B, Sep 26 read).
3. RLUSD: the month the stablecoin out-invested the asset
RLUSD compounded through every week of a month in which XRP swung 32% peak-to-trough. The dated reads: $2.326B outstanding at August 31 (independent attestation, exam dated September 29, reserves $2.446B — ~$120M above circulation), $2.409B on Ripple's September 24 dashboard (against $2.5315B of reserves), "~$2.4B, up more than 50% in a month" per Ripple's Jack McDonald on September 30 — a claim that reconciles from an early-August base, not from the attestation, and is attributed here rather than adopted — and ~$2.52B on DefiLlama in early October (The Bitstream, Oct 2; Coinspeaker via DefiLlama, ~Oct 2). The chain split ended the month at 44% XRPL ($1.12B) / 56% Ethereum ($1.40B), with the XRPL side out-growing ETH for the month (+7.76% vs +6.61%) and holding ~92% of the ledger's ~$1.2B stablecoin market.
The demand-shape evidence is the month's quiet win: RLUSD/USDS on Spark's Stablecoin FX Layer processed over $600M in its first week on Uniswap v4 — the first flow-sized support for the settlement-rail thesis over the trading-stablecoin thesis — while Binance began paying 800,000 XRP to RLUSD holders in a four-week campaign and Ripple's product leads tied the stablecoin and the Permission Delegation amendment to the same regulated-issuer workflow. The unresolved item is unchanged since August: Ethereum still holds $280M more RLUSD than the ledger does, and the mechanism most likely to close that gap — collateral demand from XRP holders — still has no published usage print.
4. Supply & the ledger
| Series | Reading | Source, date |
|---|---|---|
| Circulating supply (market-data basis) | ~63.1B XRP | COINOTAG (63,092,975,951), Oct 2; CoinGecko basis 62.88B, Sep 27 |
| Circulating supply (ledger basis) | ~68.4B XRP | XRPScan post-relock, Oct 1 |
| XRP in escrow | 31.54B XRP (31.6%) | XRPScan via Finbold, Oct 1 — after the second consecutive textbook cycle (1B out, 700M back, 300M net) |
| Total XRP burned (all-time) | 14,394,279 XRP | XRPScan via CoinAlertNews, Oct 1 |
| ETF custody | 1.18B XRP (7 funds) | XRP Radar, Sep 26; repeated Oct 1 |
| Corporate treasury | ~473M XRP (1 company) | Evernorth press release, Oct 1 — listing as XRPN in the days ahead |
September was the month the float became legible. The September 26 custody map distributed the full 100 billion across named categories for the first time this year — Ripple 36.72B, tracked exchanges 20.32B (largest single venue ~6.38B), co-founders ~4.60B, ETFs 1.18B, corporate treasury 473.3M, XRPL DeFi 394.1M — and October 1 ran the escrow mechanism's second consecutive textbook loop, leaving 31.54B locked and 300M of net monthly drip as the standing supply schedule every demand number competes against. The Bitget breach removed 102.9M XRP from the known-holder column into an unknown one: arithmetically 0.10% of supply, behaviourally an unresolved overhang.
5. Network activity
| Metric | Value | Source, date |
|---|---|---|
| Daily transactions | ~2.4M/day, +21% YoY | XRP Ledger data via crypto.news, September compilation |
| Payment volume spike | 929M XRP on Sep 29 (+35.1% vs ~615M 30-day avg), cooling to 708.6M | XRPL data via PrimeXBT, Oct 1 |
| x402 AI-agent payments | 1M → 10M+ during the quarter; ~600K/day clearing by October | RippleX via CoinGape / PrimeXBT, Oct 1 |
| High-value activity | 1,917 transactions ≥ $100K in a single session (Sep 22), a one-month high; 3,647 new wallets | Santiment via Blockonomi, Sep 23 |
| Settlement finality | 3–5 seconds (protocol constant) | XRPL protocol specification |
The network's September signature: activity concentrated while users consolidated — roughly 2.4M transactions a day across ~40% fewer active accounts year-over-year, DEX order-book volume up 79% YoY, and a payment-volume spike that ran against price on September 29. The x402 line is the month's forward-looking datum: a tenfold acceleration in AI-agent payment count inside one quarter, at near-zero ticket size, with Stripe integrating XRP for agent payments — infrastructure adoption ahead of revenue adoption, on the one workload where a 4-second ledger is structurally advantaged.
6. Derivatives: the record rebuild
Open interest ran the month's most violent non-price series: $3.06B (early September) → $2.86B (September 17) → $4.10B on September 23 — a nine-month record, +43% in six days, overtaking Hyperliquid and Zcash in futures depth, with CME OI up 16% in a day to $756M and Binance up 10% to ~$700M (CoinGlass via Blockonomi, Sep 23). The book then held through the Bitget week and the quiet week: Binance's XRP perp OI dipped 15.3% from its six-month high to ~$485M (October 1), rebuilt to $580M on the jobs-print session (CryptoQuant via PrimeXBT; CoinGlass via CoinGape, Oct 2). No full-market OI total was published inside the month's final week, so the September 23 record stands as the last dated full-market read. Funding printed +0.01% on October 2, the highest since September 23 (CoinGlass via CoinGape). The calibration that cuts the fear down to size: a $4.10B book against a $95.9B market cap is meaningful leverage, but the September lesson is that the distribution of outcomes changed with the rebuild — an 11.6% intraday band requires a leverage stack on both sides, and September's tape had one for the last fortnight of the month.
7. The institutions month: breach, attribution, custody, listing
September's institutional ledger is the densest this site has recorded, and it divides cleanly into three columns. The security column: the Bitget breach ($387.5M, the largest exchange event of the year, ~31% of Q3's industry-wide $1.26B in losses) moved through disclosure, attribution and operational closure inside eight days — Chainalysis's October 1 report delivered the definitive DPRK attribution and a routing map in which the XRPL carried 40.8% of the exodus and exited to Bitcoin within days; Bitget resumed withdrawals on schedule (XRP on October 2), doubled its bounty to 10%, and replenished its protection fund with its own capital inside a week. The adoption column: Absa launched Africa's first bank-led digital asset custody on Ripple's stack (September 21); CSD BR — a CVM-authorized Brazilian central securities depository — began mirroring BTG Pactual fund shares onto the XRPL as a registration and audit layer (September 30); and Evernorth, the largest publicly traded pure-play XRP treasury, cleared its shareholder vote (September 30) for a Nasdaq debut with ~473M XRP in the days after the month turned. The framework column: the CLARITY Act died at cloture (September 15), and the agencies began replacing it — SEC staff FAQs on functional networks (September 25), a 760-page custody proposal with state trust companies as qualified custodians, and a joint SEC-CFTC rulemaking effort. Three columns, one direction: the asset's institutional surface area grew on every axis except the one the price trades on.
8. October's decision stack
- The treasury listing. Evernorth's closing and XRPN's first Nasdaq session, back-to-back in the days after this report: the week-one premium or discount to NAV is the market's verdict on a second mechanical bid.
- The amendment window. PermissionDelegationV1_1 (~21:25 UTC), fixBatchV1_2 (~14:13 UTC the next day), BatchV1_1 (~14:46 UTC shortly after), conditional on validator support holding; the xrpld 3.4.1 release is a consensus prerequisite.
- The Fed, late in the month. Priced at 71.8–77.9% hold odds after the 29,000-payrolls print — the hike tail that hung over the month has been cut to 22–28%.
- Swell, New York, late in the month. The year's flagship Ripple conference, historically a cadence-anchor for announcements.
- Every session — the flow test. Whether the ETF complex's pause is tactical: a week above $50M with the $133M gap narrowing would settle it; a continuation of $5M weeks with the gap widening would harden the "averaging-down complex" read.
- The seasonality warning. October is historically XRP's weakest month (mean near −4.71%, red in 2024 and 2025) inside a Q4 that averages +13.3% (CryptoRank via TheChainPost, Oct 1).
9. Levels & scenarios
| Level | Read |
|---|---|
| $1.70 | The Fibonacci ceiling that rejected the August 22 spike and has capped every rally since |
| $1.6536 | The September 23 high — the eight-month peak; the month's memory level |
| $1.60 | The February 4 wall: probed twice in September, closed above zero times |
| $1.5472–$1.5552 | The falling supply line of the October triangle — the pattern's trigger |
| $1.4537 | The floor: held five times in the quiet fortnight; a close below ends the range |
| $1.40–$1.41 | The 200-day moving-average zone and the whale-accumulation shelf |
| $1.2527 | The September low — the decision-week extreme |
Scenarios into the stack: a triangle break above $1.5552 on volume hands the $1.60–$1.6536 zone its first well-sponsored retest, with the amendment activations and the XRPN debut as the demand-side candidates; a continued hold inside $1.45–$1.55 extends the digest and lets the seasonality argument ripen; a close below $1.4537 — the level the market has defended five times — opens $1.40–$1.41, with $1.37 (the 50-day overlap) as the deeper reference. The ETF gap and the leverage book are the two variables that decide whether any of those moves extend: a complex that resumes pressing and a book that stays near $4.7B make breakouts travel; a complex still paused makes every move fade.
Bottom line
Grade September by its ledgers, not its candlestick. The tape ledger: +7.9%, an eight-month high, a $1.25 low, and the first all-green quarter on record — three consecutive positive monthly closes that survived three separate month-end settlement points. The flow ledger: a second-place $121.4M month carried by one squeeze week, a record $133M gap between contributed capital and assets, and a complex that ended the month pausing. The structure ledger: a custody map that made the float legible, a security event that was attributed, contained and operationally closed inside eight days, a listed treasury company one week from trading, and three amendments with activation timestamps. The derivatives ledger: a record rebuild that never left. September built more market structure than any month this year and confirmed less of it in price than any month since June. October — with its timestamps, its listing, its Fed and its hostile seasonality — is the month the structure either starts paying or starts waiting again.

FAQ
Was September a good month or a disappointing one?
Both, by ledger. Price: +7.9%, an eight-month high at $1.6536, and the first all-green quarter on record — but a close 10% below the high. Flows: the complex's second-best month ever ($121.4M), yet one in which a single week carried 62% of the total and the under-water gap widened to a record $133M. Structure: the densest institutional month this site has recorded. The month built; it did not confirm.
Why does the September gain read +7.9% when some sources printed +10.1%?
Endpoint conventions. Our figure measures the August 31 close ($1.3790) to the September 30 close ($1.4884) — a calendar-month pair. Sources that measure from the September 1 close ($1.3516) get +10.12%, because the month's first session itself fell. Both are correct at their stated cuts; we quote the calendar-month pair consistently and name it.
Did the Bitget breach change September's market verdict?
It confirmed one. The breach was directly asset-specific — the largest single theft line in the year was XRP — and XRP closed higher on disclosure day and finished the breach week up 7.1%. The market classified a venue event as a venue event, the same tape that had cut XRP 10% intraday on a legislative failure with no asset-specific content. Chainalysis's October 1 attribution and routing map (XRP exiting to Bitcoin within days) subsequently confirmed the non-reaction was correct for the right reason.
Is the first all-green quarter a bullish signal?
It is a durability signal, not a directional one. Three consecutive positive monthly closes mean buying pressure survived three separate month-end settlement points — the streak was not one violent week. The same reporting supplies the caution: October is historically XRP's weakest month (mean near −4.71%, red in 2024 and 2025). The record makes the next monthly close a genuine test rather than a formality.
Is this financial advice?
No. XRPLinsights publishes research and commentary for informational purposes. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell XRP or any other asset.
